United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has lauded Thailand for its recent success in the smooth 3 July general election.
In his statement issued on Thursday, Mr Ban complimented all political parties which have kept their promise to respect the will of the majority expressed via the democratic process.
The UN secretary-general also expressed his hope that the general election will be an important step for Thailand to move forward towards the national reconciliation process, long-term stability and stronger democracy in the country.
According to the UN news centre’s website, the UN chief also wished that the election in Thailand will help consolidate democracy, reconciliation and stability in the ASEAN region.
Prior to the 3 July general election, Mr Ban issued a statement encouraging Thailand to conduct a transparent general election in a democratic manner and pleading all sides to refrain from violence.
