PM orders 4 governors to swiftly drain floodwater during 6-12 Oct
Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has assigned the governors of four provinces along the Chao Phraya River to join hands in siphoning floodwater into the sea during the upcoming low tide from 6 to 12 October.
Prime Minister Yingluck called a meeting with the governors of Bangkok, Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi and Samut Prakan at Thai Khu Fah Building, Government House, to discuss methods for draining the excess water out of their areas as quickly as possible. The governors were instructed to coordinate with one another closely as well as with an ad hoc committee to be set up to oversee the situation.
Since the sea level is expected to lower during 6-12 October, the Interior Ministry’s Emergency Operation Center for Flood, Storm and Landslide will also help divert the floodwater into the Gulf of Thailand in an attempt to leave enough room in major dams ahead of the arrival of additional storms.
During the meeting, the governors of Pathum Thani and Samut Prakan affirmed that the local water situations were still under control. At the same time, the Nonthaburi governor also reported that flood barriers had been readied for possible river runoff while assuring that the evacuation of residents in risky areas would be conducted promptly if necessary.
